Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I was surrounded by the message that a beautiful, skinny body was the ultimate source of value. My mother, a fashion photographer, often worked with models who epitomized this ideal. As my body developed early and differently from my peers, and my unique learning style made traditional schooling challenging, I found myself retreating into my own world. Music and personal expression became my refuge. One of my most significant discoveries was aerobics.

I will never forget! I was 13 years old, and my brother had been going to the gym and found this class he loved. He knew how much I loved music and came home saying, "Jessie, there's a class on Saturday, and you're coming with me. I promise you're gonna love it!" Boy, was he right! I’m pretty sure my eyes looked like a couple of flying saucers!

Afterward, when I told my brother how cute I thought the instructor was, he said, “Besides the fact you are THIRTEEN, don’t bother; he asked me for my phone number. You’re not his type.”

The energy was electric, and the music was infectious. It wasn’t about perfecting the movements but about joy, freedom, and the shared experience of moving our bodies. In aerobics classes, I found a diverse community united by movement and dance.

So why now, at age 45? Simply put, life is short. After becoming a mother, my perspective on self-image shifted dramatically. I wanted to model a healthy relationship with my body for my daughter.

This led to the creation of “Aerobiscuits and Gravy”—a fun, inclusive gathering where people of all shapes and sizes can come together to move joyfully and enjoy delicious food afterward. I want to show her that it’s never too late to chase a dream, no matter how wild it may seem! It’s okay to chase it just because it’s fun, to become nothing more than just fun! Aerobiscuits and Gravy celebrates movement, community, and nourishment—both physical and emotional. It’s not about perfect steps but the sheer joy of dancing, laughing, and connecting with others.

Join us to experience the uplifting power of music, movement, and community. Let’s dance, laugh, and enjoy some really damn good food together!
